If it costs the jazz society $4000 to have a quartet of touring jazz musicians perform here in Charlottesville and we have, if we’re lucky, 100 people attending the performance, would you be willing to pay a ticket price of $40 per person?

Today’s jazz music genre has many talented performers. However, many of them have little name recognition. We’ve noticed through the years that it is difficult to get people out for performers that they are not already familiar with. Please share your thoughts on how we can encourage more of you to attend performances by musicians you are unfamiliar with.

Indicate the type of jazz they play. Some folks will only attend performances by mainstream or straight-ahead players, some like free jazz, cutting-edge, etc.

Include a taste of their sound from their CD (s), and a link to their website, plus quotes from previous press. Post future acts within the calendar, even if not every consecutive month is booked by CJS – the more time people have to browse and explore cuts of music, the more time for ‘buzz’ about an upcoming artist playing, the higher probability of attendance.

But what would be a fair ticket price? What would you pay? I’ve paid $50 to $60 for tickets at the Paramount. It’s really hard to bring in outside performers and then charge $10 for tickets and expect to make enought money to cover venue costs and musician’s fees. How do we overcome this?

I’m into free jazz I guess more than anything else. I’d love to see some of the acts that play the Stone in NYC down here in Charlottesville!
